Requirements for Membership
To become a regular member of the European Society of Lingual Orthodontics, all applicants must present the records of two complete cases treated with lingual appliances.
The case is evaluated entirely upon the results of treatment. No evaluation is made with respect to the type of lingual appliance or auxiliaries used during treatment.
The patient's appearance and smile should be improved after treatment. Emphasis is placed upon the overcorrection of dental and facial abnormalities.
Study models
Pre and post-treatment models of each case are required. All models are to be made from faultless impressions. They must be white and clean, and they should have good anatomic details and be smoothly finished and trimmed according to the following specifications:
1. The art proportion should be approximately 1/3 of the total height of the anatomical portion of the maxillary and mandibular halves of the model.
The overall heights of the models will therefore vary according to the size and age of the patient.
2. the incisal curvature of the mandibular model and the heel cuts of both models will be left to individual discretion with respect to art and proportion.
3. Occlusal plane: Final models should show normal overjet or slight overtreatment.
4. Overjet: Final models should show normal overjet or slight overtreatment.
5. Overbite: Final models should show normal overbite, I.e. with the upper incisal edge extending downward by 1/3 of the height of the crown of the lower incisors.
6. Midline: The midline of the upper arch should correspond to that of the lower arch.
7. Detailing: This covers the fine points that go to make a perfect model. These include rotational control, torque control and aesthetic positioning of the upper incisors.
Facial Photographs
a. Pre- and post-treatment frontal and profile photographs are requested. If available, photographs with the patient smiling and in oblique view are also welcome. These prints can be in black and white or in color, with the profile facing right and if possible, left. Patients should be oriented with the Frankfort plane parallel to the bottom border of the print.
b. In view of the fact that changes in facial aesthetics will be accorded the same importance and the same status as occlusal perfection in the future, great care should be exercised in taking the pre- and post -treatment photographs.
Dental Photographs
a. Frontal, right and left as well as intraoral color prints of the patient, taken before and after the treatment are required. These prints must be neatly filed in appropriate ring-binders.
b. Pre- and post-treatment photographs of the teeth in occlusion are obviously important in the field of lingual orthodontics.
c. Photographs relating to the most significant stages of the treatment (at least two stages) will be particularly welcome. These prints should show the type of appliance and mechanics used. Photographs showing the teeth in occlusion are fundamentally important in this case, too.
Intraoral X-rays
a. Pre- and post-treatment full-mouth intraoral x-rays are required. Films should be made at the correct angulation showing the apices of the teeth.
b. Good quality orthopantomographic views are also acceptable.
Headplates
a. Pre- and post-treatment lateral head plates with the patient facing right are required.
b. Head plates should show detail in both the porion area and the soft tissue.
Tracings
a. Tracing systems adopted by different schools and various authors are accepted, provided the schools or authors are internationally renowned.
b. All tracings must show the patient facing right.
c. The original or pre-treatment tracing should be drawn in solid lines in black or white at the applicant's option.
d. Post-treatment tracings should be drawn in red lines.
e. Superimposition tracings are also required to show changes during treatment.
f. To facilitate examiner's work, the pre- and post-treatment tracings should not be attached to one another. The tracings should be placed in a transparent folder from which they can be readily removed by the examiners.
